What is collagen?
Collagen is a fibrous protein, which is important for different tissues. The protein contributes to an increase and maintenance of muscle mass as well as to the maintenance of normal bones. Furthermore, the strength of ligaments and tendons as well as the pressure resistance of the joint cartilage is influenced by the collagen content in the body. The collagen generated by the body is mainly located in the connective tissue, between the upper skin (epidermis) and the lower skin (subcuticle). This layer is responsible for the flexibility and firmness of the skin. The connective tissue of the skin is located throughout the day in a constant up-and-down process, which is also influenced by the diet. The natural ageing process slows down the build up of collagen and is therefore overhauled by the degradation process.
